MESA: Exposure to STEM Education Travel

MESA (Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement) UC Davis is a college preparatory program designed to inspire underrepresented, first-generation middle and high school students in the Sacramento region to pursue STEM fields. MESA provides opportunities for hands-on learning and exposure to real-world STEM applications, aiming to boost students' interest, confidence, and academic success. MESA UC Davis is working to establish an annual domestic and/or international STEM travel opportunity for underserved students participating in our MESA program in the Sacramento region.

In June 2025, MESA will host its first domestic STEM travel opportunity in collaboration with EF Education Tours. Twenty-five MESA students from Smythe Academy will visit Boston, a hub of STEM innovation. The students will engage in hands-on workshops, such as working with FIRST Robotics, and participate in experiential learning activities. They will also visit prestigious institutions like MIT and explore cutting-edge locations, including a Microgrid workshop and the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Throughout the tour, students will network with professionals (such as scientists, engineers, etc) and learn about diverse STEM careers.

Funds raised provide general support to MESA and will help to cover the expenses for MESA staff chaperones (undergraduate students, program coordinators, director), including flight, transportation, meals, and tour costs. If the fundraising goal is exceeded, the remaining funds will support future STEM travel opportunities for MESA pre-college students and teachers. This initiative promotes critical skills such as problem-solving, cultural awareness, and global competency, while also fostering a sense of belonging in the STEM community, ultimately motivating students to pursue STEM careers and higher education.
