The Peter J. and Carolee W. Shields Society recognizes the thoughtful generosity of those who have made planned gifts—regardless of their size—to UC Davis or UC Davis Health. Planned gifts include will provisions, life income gifts such as trusts, annuities or pooled income funds, retirement plan balances and life insurance policies.
A Gift that Pays You Income: A Charitable Gift Annuity
For Bill Owen ’69, J.D. ’72, “a charitable gift annuity made sense… I can make a gift now and receive payments in return with a good interest rate.” Ultimately, his gift will support the College of Letters and Science and School of Law annual funds, with the goal of helping students face the high costs of living and tuition.
How it works:
- You transfer cash, securities, or other property to UC Davis.
- You receive an income tax deduction, depending on the asset used. If you give appreciated stock, you may save capital gains tax.
- UC Davis pays a fixed amount each year to you or to anyone you name for life. Typically, a portion of these payments is tax-free.
- When the gift annuity ends, its remaining principal is given to UC Davis.

Annuity rates are based on the age of the income beneficiary(ies), if it is for one life or two lives, and if you want the income to start immediately or wait until sometime in the future.
