Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve: Stewards of the Future

Stewards of the Future is a student discovery program that provides hands-on experience in the stewardship of a California Inner Coast Range wildland. Students are mentored in the real-world challenges of conservation and protected area management. UC Davis’ Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve is dedicated to research, teaching, education and public outreach. Community science, the development of environmental policy and responsible land stewardship is an essential component for the long-term protection of this UC wildlands gem. SCCR provides easy, close-to-campus access for students to explore and create transformational experiences in a truly wildland setting. Internships are catered to be educational while also providing needed services to the site. Our goal is to limit all barriers to participation, so that these vital experiences are inviting and realistic for all interested students.

Funding raised by this campaign will be used to create field internships for students from all disciplines and backgrounds. They will alleviate the logistical and financial constraints typically placed upon students who are required to work in an off-campus, backcountry setting, such as transportation costs, necessary personal field gear, stipends and special trainings, such as wilderness first aid.

Stewards of the Future will connect future generations of land stewards, conservationists, scientists and nature-loving citizens with the complex, invigorating and inspiring practice of real world conservation. This $5,000 campaign will fund one summer intern.

The UC Natural Reserve System (the ‘NRS’) is a world leader in environmental research and education, and provides living wildland laboratories for hands-on student experiences and research beyond the classroom. These experiences broaden perspectives, heighten curiosity, and create life-long connections by providing a unique sense of place. The Stebbins Cold Canyon Reserve and surrounding Cahill and Spencer Ranch properties are ideally situated for easy close-to-campus access for students to explore and create transformational experiences in a backcountry setting. Part of the NRS’ network of 41 protected areas, Stebbins protects unique representations of California Coast Range habitat and ecological refugia.

These reserves provide the basis for important research in all disciplines from the arts and humanities to the sciences and engineering and holds diversity and inclusion as a core value.
