About

Creating a Brewing Industry as Diverse as the Beers We Love

There’s room in brewing for a broader range of people, perspectives and experiences and, by educating a more diverse pool of brewers, UC Davis will help open those doors.

Now in its fourth year, the UC Davis Tapping Potential program seeks $16,000 to fund diversity-focused, full-ride scholarships to the prestigious UC Davis Online Master Brewers Certificate Program.

Your Support Has Life-Changing Impact

Last year, with generous support from breweries, hops growers and beer lovers, we:

  • Awarded a scholarship to Dung Ngô, one of a handful of Vietnam’s female brewing professionals
  • Brought Chijindu Onwuchekwa, our 2023 Tapping Potential winner, to Davis from Nigeria to participate in the Master Brewers Program Practical Bootcamp at our state-of-the-art Anheuser Busch InBev Pilot Brewery.

With your help, this year we can do more.

Scholarships are available to students who are committed to diversity, have experience and/or understanding of the barriers traditionally faced by people from underrepresented populations and demonstrate a high potential for leadership in promoting understanding of diverse groups in the brewing industry.

By supporting this campaign, you will provide general support to the Tapping Potential program and will be giving aspiring professional brewers the opportunity to:

  • Learn how to manage all aspects of a world-class professional brewing operation, from raw ingredients to fermentation to packaging and quality assurance
  • Design a brewery, including equipment selection, installation and evaluation of production processes
  • Attend a once-in-a-lifetime bootcamp at UC Davis' state-of-the-art Anheuser Busch InBev Pilot Brewery and Sierra Nevada Brewing Science Laboratory
  • Learn from (and be mentored by) the world’s most knowledgeable brewing instructors
  • Network with experts, brewery owners and future leaders of the industry
  • Launch their career as a brewer (graduates of this program are highly sought by breweries)

Re-shaping an industry takes time, but education and the lifetime of opportunities it represents is the first step. By contributing, you help transform the lives of individual brewers and, through them, the industry we are all so passionate about.

Tapping Potential Donor Stories

Hey Beer Lovers, one of my favorite things about Tapping Potential is connecting with donors. With Tapping Potential starting to wind down (we're at 83% of Goal with 8 days left), I thought I'd briefly share a few of their stories:

  • I met Daniel at a recent Sacramento Area Brewers Guild meeting. He works at a local brewery on the business side. Incredibly cool guy!
  • Christy is a UC Davis alum. She lives in Texas now, but fondly remembers the UC Davis brewing class she took as a freshman 35+ years ago.
  • Markus knows more about beer - particularly German styles - than any non-professional I've met. Plus, in his youth, he used to play the accordion at Sudwerk in the early '90s!
  • Lisa works at UC Davis. She's a huge supporter of both diversity and our local craft breweries.

And speaking of local craft breweries, our Tapping Potential collab beer, based on a Hibiscus Ale recipe provided by 2023 Tapping Potential winner Chijindu Onwuchekwa, is available at Three Mile Brewery, Sudwerk and Gunrock on campus (all Davis), Oak Park Brewery and Touchstone Brewing Company (Sac), Barebottle (Bay Area) and Clandestine Brewing (San Jose). If you get a chance to taste it, let us know what you think!

Thanks for your support.
