2024-2025 STEM For Girls: Empowering Girls and Gender-Expansive Youth in STEM
STEM for Girls invites 10-12 year-old girls and gender-expansive youth from the Woodland and Sacramento areas to the University of California, Davis for a free full day immersion into science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) facilitated through hands on workshops and interactive lab tours led by UC Davis graduate students and faculty.
ABOUT THE FUND
Your gifts will support the STEM for Girls fund and its mission. Our team uses the fund to provide an engaging and empowering, free, full-day STEM immersion camp for 60+ youth, many of whom come from low-income families and school districts throughout Yolo and Sacramento counties. In addition, your gift will support the funding of supplies and materials for hands-on workshops and interactive lab tours, provide round-trip transportation for 50 students and their teachers and support ongoing training and development of Team Leaders. Any remaining funds from the STEM for Girls fund will be used to support in the expansion of the STEM for Girls program, build partnerships with new schools, and provide enhanced development opportunities for Team Leaders.

Have you ever seen a human brain up close? Its heavy...and slippery...and according to all our participants, it smells bad (not the brain itself...but the liquid it is preserved in).
What's important is that each of these young humans gets an opportunity that many of us may never actually have; they get to see what is inside their skull. They get to put on gloves, work through their apprehension, and trace the curved maze of brain tissue that makes this organ unique.
There is nothing like watching the courage each participant finds when presented with something they have never seen before. It truly is a moment.

It's not because I have more snacks or breakfast items to pick up due to a missed order, but because, like clockwork, schools are so excited that they arrive 30-45 minutes before the scheduled time. The anticipation is contagious. Last year, my alarm rang at 5:30 a.m. I was out the door by 6:30 a.m., my car loaded with perishable breakfast items. After picking up the cargo van our team had pre-loaded the night before, I headed to the Student Community Center, where we host STEM for Girls every year. By 7:30 a.m., our volunteers were already hard at work, covering tables with butcher paper, setting up a STEM-themed photo booth, and decorating the walls with empowering quotes and STEM puns. We were nearly ready to go, just in time for our 8:00 a.m. morning meeting with Team Leaders, where we reminded them that schools were expected to arrive by 8:30 a.m. But as you might guess, 8:30 was optimistic. At 8:00 sharp, the first two schools burst through the doors, their excitement leading the way.
It’s hard to find just one word to describe the transformation that happens when our school partners arrive, but the ones that come to mind are: joy-filled, bright-eyed, laughter, curiosity, exploration, growth, community, and love. It’s life in motion—the next generation discovering their passion and potential.
