Textiles and clothing are considered a form of culture reflecting human behavior and social development. With over 50 years of collecting and preserving textiles and costumes from around the world, the UC Davis Jo Ann C. Stabb Design consists of over 5,000 items that are used to enhance the teaching and research activities of the Department of Design and is also highly sought after for use in exhibitions for public education.

Co-curated by Mary Schoeser, a world-renowned textile author and historian, and Adele Zhang, the manager of the Design Collection, both UC Davis alumni, more than one hundred symbolic artifacts from the Design Collection will be featured in the exhibition “Textiles: The Art of Mankind” at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London, UK in 2025, celebrating the deep entanglement between textiles, people, and our world.

Bringing the Design Collection to broader audiences will not only showcase the educational enrichment that UC Davis offers to the world but also raise the profile of the Design Collection and demonstrate the innovative stewardship of the university resources. The proper packing and handling of the textile artifacts is the first and one of the most critical steps to safeguard the success of this international exhibition. Funds donated to the Design Collection’s UK Exhibition will be designated to purchase essential museum-grade shipping supplies, such as archival textile boxes and other quality packing materials.
