This campaign has ended. However, you may still support the SHINES - Summer Health Institute for Nursing Exploration and Success fund here.
The Summer Health Institute for Nursing Exploration and Success (SHINES) program is a summer initiative that prepares local high school students and recently graduated adults to become informed about pathways to a career in nursing.
The Betty Irene Moore School of Nursing initiative is led by Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Inclusive Excellence, Dr. Piri Ackerman. Her extraordinary team is dedicated to creating a robust pool of students with the desire to pursue nursing or health care as well as to advance health equity.
Research shows that rural and underserved communities are healthier when the clinicians who serve them resemble them and are part of their community.
We also know that nurses, at 5 million strong, are poised to mitigate health disparities and lead the charge in health care reform. SHINES works with the students to nurture this desire as well as develop a sense of self-efficacy that will help drive their efforts.
For two weeks, participants learn to make informed and professional decisions about whether nursing is the right fit for them, which nursing pathways would best suit their needs and interests, and how to achieve success in their academic aspirations. A goal of the SHINES Program is to help participants understand the community impact they can make by returning to their communities to serve the people they know and love.
Support SHINES today for healthier communities tomorrow!
