This campaign has ended. However, you may still support the Latinx Health Experiences in Oaxaca fund here.
The Chicana/o/x Studies Department at UC Davis, in collaboration with Global Hub Learning and the Internship and Career Center, offer the Latinx Health Internship in Oaxaca, Mexico. This 20 units program began in 2006 and takes place during Fall quarter. It gives students the opportunity to learn about transnational health (US-Mexico), cultural humility, and provides students with cultural competencies crucial for becoming effective health care professionals. The internships at hospitals and clinics are arranged by Child Health Family International where students are nonclinical observers in rotations and other clinic activities. The internships are designed to provide clinical experience that lead to greater Spanish fluency, and help clarify career goals while acquiring greater cultural humility.
Over the last 19 years the program has taught over 400 students, many of whom have pursued careers in medicine, public health, and nursing. In 2019, the Latinx Health Internship Program was awarded the Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion International Education Award.
We, with the support of the Global Learning Hub, are working hard at recruiting to ensure sustainable student enrollment in the program, but the current political climate presents an additional challenge to meeting this goal. We now have a fundraising challenge of raising over $100,000 yearly. We do not want to lose the Oaxaca Program due to budgetary pressures.
As a result, the Oaxaca Program is in danger of being terminated due to budgetary constraints.
Gifts to our campaign will provide support for learning opportunities on transnational (US-Mexico) health issues in Oaxaca, Mexico, including but not limited to internships, public health experiences, and programmatic and operational support.
Next year marks the 20-year anniversary and we refuse to give up on this transformative program!
We’ve passed our original goal of $2,000 and we’re now aiming higher. Thank you to everyone who has supported our efforts so far. We’re setting a stretch goal of $5,000 in pursuit of our overall goal of raising $100,000 yearly.
