iGEM at UC Davis is a student-led research team, with students from all four colleges at Davis. iGEM provides undergraduate students the opportunity to lead graduate-level research and explore the biotech industry through hands-on experience.
iGEM is a synthetic biology competition that began at MIT in 2003. Since then, it has expanded to a worldwide competition where undergraduates choose a topic from 14 ‘villages’ (topic areas) and conduct lab research from May to October before presenting at the Jamboree in Paris.
Past Davis teams have improved mRNA vaccines, created biosensors to detect environmental toxicity, and created microbes to break down plastics in the environment. iGEM also encourages teams to educate the public about synthetic biology, improving scientific understanding and literacy in Davis – prizes are awarded to teams that do exceptional work with education in addition to those with strong research.
Donations provide general support for iGEM at UC Davis, including our current priority of paying for lab supplies, equipment, registration costs and travel fees.
