Support the Project that soften end-of-life experiences for patients and families!

End-of-life in the ICU can be a frightening and alienating experience for patients and their families. The 3 Wishes Project (3WP) is a palliative care intervention that aims to soften the end-of-life experience for patients, families, and healthcare team members by eliciting and attempting to fulfill a set of wishes for a dying patient and their loved ones.

Wishes are often small and simple, and examples have included: playing the patient’s favorite music, providing the patient with a non-hospital blanket, decorating the room with the patient’s favorite memorabilia, and providing the bereaved family with personalized keepsakes. Your gift to the 3WP can help fulfill the often simple and deeply meaningful wishes of critically ill patients in the ICU.

3WP was created by Dr. Deborah Cooke in Ontario, Canada in 2013 and was first piloted in Tower 7 MSICU Gold in 2022 after experiencing an unprecedented 90% attrition of nurses due to difficult and stressful work environment, low morale and moral injury. Positive effects on caregiver morale were immediate after implementation of 3WP. Your gift will help to expand this meaningful, nurse-driven initiative to the remaining 6 adult ICUs at UC Davis Health.
